 Review

Wakanda Forever is a profound action

The face of the late Chadwick Boseman-and his beloved character chala-appears early in the sequel" Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", on Memorial murals and that Nifty Marvel Studios intro. But his presence and legacy are deeply felt throughout the film, as various characters (and the audience) deal with grief and move on with their lives in the face of adversity – both personal and superhero

Director Ryan Coogler makes a solid follow-up to the phenomenal" Black Panther " of 2018, funny, smart and heartbreaking, impressive in world-building, honest in his worldview of world politics and naturally full of huge action sequences. (If you've been missing the "Iron Man" movies, this has your fill of people in armored supersuits.)

At its emotional core, though, "Wakanda Forever" (- out of four; rated BG – 13; in theaters now) is also a film about the ways people protect their family and heritage, and like chala's path in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – find out where they stand and follow those who came before them

A new hero appears in the Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

As an art imitating life, the film begins with loss: t'challa has died and his mother Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) now rules Wakanda. But while tshala was more diplomatic, seeking to share his African nation's valuable vibranium with the world, Ramonda does not comply after the death of her son. Instead, she takes her fellow world leaders to the hungry mission to use this natural resource and attack her people to get it

America has acquired the technology that detects vibranium – apparently not only in Wakanda-and this advance brings to the surface another Hidden Kingdom: talukan, made up of the underwater Mesoamerican people led by the mysterious Namor (Tenoch Huerta Meg Irma). A man with actual superpowers instead of high-tech power, threatens Riri Williams (Dominic Thorne), a 19-year-old MIT student who developed the new device. Wakandan princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Dora's boss milaji Okoye (Danai Gurira) hit the road to protect her

Who is the New Black Panther? Here's what we know (so far) about Marvel's Wakanda Forever

'We're here now': the Mayan-inspired kingdom of Namur is a new enemy in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'
Okoye (Danai Gurira, left) and Shuri (Letitia Wright) go undercover to protect a teenage tech prodigy in the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

In the end, Namor and Shuri quarrel heart to heart about their sides of this brewing war, although betrayal leads to bad blood, Wakandan superspy Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) enters the battle, and a new guy in a Black Panther cloak in a movie accomplishes a little in two hours and 41 minutes without exceeding the welcome duration

"Wakanda Forever" weaves in real-world geopolitical thriller elements better than any Marvel film since" Captain America: the Winter Soldier."With a screenplay by original co-writers "Tiger" Kugler and Joe Robert Cole, the film examines the effects of isolationism and the greed of global superpowers while also delving into the history of Mayan culture with the talukan people. The first "Black Panther" spectacularly revealed the world of Wakanda, and the sequel realizes another society with interesting traditions and a tragic backstory that, for good reason, does not want to show itself to the rest of civilization

'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever': What You Should Know Before you go to see the Marvel sequel
Maya and Mesoamerican culture and references are included in the appearance of Namur (Tenoch Huerta Meg Irma) and the talukan people in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreve

Namor is thoughtfully and dynamically played by Meg Irma, a very angry enemy, like Michael B.Jordan's Killmonger in the first "tiger", reinforces the hostility from an understandable place. As the new guy RiRi (who is a kind of teenage Tony Stark), Thorn brings a sense of humor to serious events

The returning Wakandan team receives the most important parts of character development. Some characters, such as Winston Duke's beloved scary Mbaku, settle into new roles, while others (especially Wright and Bassett's mother-daughter duo) have transformative arcs that test their beliefs. Wakanda is filled with compelling women who come to their own here: they question each other, make difficult decisions and wrestle with complications in ways that make them a joy to watch

"Wakanda Forever" does not live up to its predecessor, a brilliant effort that combined Bosman's charisma and masterful performance with Kugler's gift for mundane narrative. But the sequel presents a similar technical achievement – the costumes and production design are simply fantastic-and the plot points of the original film pay off and have consequences in the last one, which also deals with the death of Chala in a very real and authentic way

The New "Black Panther" celebrates and honors his fallen hero, at the same time showing that this corner of MKU is still in very capable hands

Shortly after the release of Black Panther, in February 2018, Kevin Feige - producer and president of Marvel Studios - declares that there are many other possible stories around the character of Black Panther and that he wishes the return of Ryan Coogler for these potential sequels. For his part, the filmmaker explains that he first wants to wait to see how the character will evolve within the next films of the Marvel cinematic universe. In March 2018, Kevin Feige explains that the studio has a clear idea of the direction to take. It is revealed shortly after that Chadwick Boseman is in negotiations to appear in two more films about Black Panther

In November 2018, Letitia Wright was confirmed in the role of Shuri. The producer officially confirms the film at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, while Martin Freeman confirms in August that he will reprise his role as Everett K. Ross. During the D23, the release date is set for May 6, 2022. Kevin Feige states that Ryan Coogler has finished the script

Actor Chadwick Boseman died on August 28, 2020 from cancer. Director Ryan Coogler states that he was unaware of his illness, as were Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Several solutions are mentioned in the press such as taking another actor for the title role or transmitting the costume to the character of Shuri, as in the comics. In November 2020, executive producer Victoria Alonso rejects any idea of using a digital understudy of the actor and declares that the studio is taking its time to find the right decision. Later, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are confirmed to reprise their roles, while Tenoch Huerta Mejía is mentioned to play the main antagonist

In December 2020, Kevin Feige confirmed that the role of T'Challa will not be held by another actor and that the sequel will explore the world and the characters of the first film. The American release is then set for July 8, 2022. In January 2021, Kevin Feige confirmed that Chadwick Boseman will not be present via digital special effects

In March 2021, Ryan Coogler states that he is still working on the script and explains that working without Chadwick Boseman is very difficult

In May 2021, Marvel Studios revealed that the film will be titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In July 2021, Angela Bassett revealed that Joe Robert Cole, co-writer of the first film, also contributed to the writing of the sequel

In August 2021, Kevin Feige confirmed that Dominique Thorne will make her first screen appearance as Riri Williams in the film, before having her own series on Disney+, scheduled for 2023
In April 2021, Ryan Coogler reveals that the shooting will take place in Georgia although the local Senate has passed a controversial law that restricts the right to vote (en). The shooting starts on June 29, 2021 at Trilith Studios near Atlanta, with the fake title Summer Break. It also takes place in Massachusetts, in particular in Worcester. Filming stops from November 2021 to early 2022 following the injury of actress Letitia Wright

Filming resumed at the beginning of January 2022 following the return of Letitia Wright but it is interrupted again, a few weeks later, due to several positive Covid-19 cases including actress Lupita Nyong'o. Officially, filming ended on March 24, 2022
