John Wick: Chapter 4
When Keanu Reeves first shot on the way back to the action genre in 2014 with John Wick, no one knew that it would become a series, but we knew right away that we wanted more. Fast forward seven years and Reeves is a super-assassin leading the entire over three deep film franchise, one that's effectively built from the mythology surrounding the underground League of assassins with their own rules, customs, and guidelines. A few days after the third installment, John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum, hit theaters, Lionsgate announced that a fourth film was already on the horizon, with Reeves returning to the starring role, stuntman-turned-filmmaker Chad stahelsky returning to directing, and Mike Finch (predators) taking over script duties. Although the covid-19 pandemic pushed the release date back a year, now we are quickly getting out the debut of John Wick: Chapter 4 and the hype, as they say, is real
Below, you'll find everything you need to know about John Wick: Chapter 4, from its release date, to where it's currently being filmed, for all of those
The first trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 was unveiled during the directors ' Collider at the directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con, which featured Chad stahelsky, Tim Miller, and Andrew Stanton. Along with the new footage, we were also able to see a new poster of the film featuring Keanu Reeves front and center with nunchucks
The full trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 was released on November 10, 2022. Set to a slowed-down version of Terry Jacks "seasons in the sun" the trailer gives us our best look yet at the film's stylistic violence, impressive ensemble, and where John Wick's quest for revenge will take him next. A short, poignant teaser trailer for the film was also released on December 19, 2022, offering a brief glimpse of Bill skarsge's supposedly antagonistic character ocherd
The final trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 was released by Lionsgate on February 16, 2023, in honor of a promotional event called 'Fuse week.'At 90 seconds long, the trailer is set to a remixed version of "wake up this morning" a song that many know as the theme for The Sopranos. The trailer has a lot of gunplay, dueling, and all kinds of violence with the titular killer at the heart of it all, we also get some shots of Scott Adkins decked out in a fat suit and a gorgeous Belgian Malinois helping Wick in battle. And if it's a behind-the-scenes look down your alley, we also got a new John Wick feature: Chapter 4 on February 20 that
John Wick: Chapter 4 was originally scheduled to hit theaters on May 21, 2021, but due to the covid-19 pandemic-as well as Reeves ' scheduling conflicts with The Matrix: resurrection—the premiere date was postponed by a year to May 27, 2022. Since then, it has been postponed again to March 24, 2023
In addition to Reeves returning as the titular killer, stahelsky also confirmed that Ian McShane will return in his fourth John Wick film. "I couldn't be happier than to welcome Ian McShane back to John Wick: Chapter 4,"the director said in a statement at the time. "He is not only a great actor but an indispensable collaborator who helped define the world of John Wick
Other familiar faces confirmed for the fourth entry are Lance Reddick and Laurence Fishburne. John Wick: Chapter 4 also quickly built a completely stacked cast of new cast members, including three of the proven action baddies in Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Scott Adkins (Ninja: Shadow of a tear), and Mark Zaror (Machete Kills), along with the most terrifying horror evil clown Bill scarsig ocherd (it), Japanese scene-stealing actor Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Kombat), Winona Earp favorite Shamir Anderson, Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama in her first film, and Kurgan himself, Clancy Brown
In a conversation with Collider, Allen especially stressed how wonderful the time he spent on the set of John Wick was
"I must take this opportunity [to show] my utmost appreciation to both Chad and Keanu. They're great guys. They are just a gentleman, they have big hearts. Keanu has a wonderful soul. Chad, too, is a very good guy. Very knowledgeable. People think he's just a great action guy , he's not. He understands the movie. He is a film librarian. He knows what's going on. I just have the best time working with them more than any of my previous Hollywood films...[Reeves] is just great. It's more than I expected. The man does everything himself. As he put it in the hours, as he put it at work. He can do that. It's not a joke
Skarsge ocherd, too, noted how he came to the franchise as a fan of the action genre and eventually joined the film after hitting it off with Stahelski
"I think movies are very entertaining. I've always been a fan of these kinds of over-the-top, exploitative action movies...Chad [stahelsky] reached out to me and I met him several times, and I really liked him. It was a really interesting role. I won't go into details [about] what it is, but it was a fun role and a fun world. I love movies. I think it's entertaining and it's something I've never done before. This is always something that inspires me, no matter what. It's like,Well, this is a project or a genre or something I haven't done, so let's give it a try and let's have fun within these genre constraints. So, I'm really looking forward to it
Stahelsky also revealed that the characters of yen and Sanada will surpass her
Among all the excellent new additions to the cast, Donnie Yen stands out as Cain. Which constitutes a formidable opponent presented as a long-time contemporary of Wick, and reflects his reluctance to carry out the Marquis's orders without question and John's refusal, in turn, to serve blindly. This similarity lends an unexpected amount of sympathy to their confrontations, but does not prevent Cain from pursuing John with all his might. Yin's friendly demeanor and brutal efficiency give him his own style and lightness, and Cain's unbridled prowess in battle leads to cheerful and funny knockouts
Also joining the mix is actor Shamir Anderson's nameless tracker character, a heavy-handed client with a dog in the John Wick movie. The tracker's changing alliances, combat skills and close relationship with his dog provide a fascinating state of tension and uncertainty in Chapter 4 which is used when an unpredictable element is needed in order to spice up wake's progress. There is also Klaus, and I want to highlight this character here. I will say two things about him: he is a huge guy and his name is Klaus. Although his participation in the film takes less time than what I spent talking about here, but I assure you that you will notice him clearly and will never forget him
In an era when grumbling about films longer than two hours is on the rise, the fast pace of Chapter 4 film responds to all protests to say that films should be as long as they need. Over the past three seasons of the Wick series, director Chad stahelsky has developed a keen knack for knowing when John should quickly dash through a room full of huge characters with high accuracy and when to allow him and US as viewers to enjoy the bloody that he is able to unleash in the most intimate confrontations. Stahelski's attention to detail across every element of the action in Chapter 4 is palpable here, perfectly communicated through Shay Hattin and Michael Finch's screenplay
I hope you are excited to see a lot of neck shooting, because you will leave Chapter 4 feeling completely satisfied
For example, it is revealed early in the film through dialogue that the High Table troops who are now after John Wick are wearing impenetrable armor from head to toe, something that I admit resembles something that came out of a video game. But stahelsky responds to this through action rather than dialogue, as the armored enemies force wick to modify his traditional strategy of shooting people in any part of their body that it takes more. I hope you are excited to see a lot of neck shooting, because you will leave Chapter 4 feeling completely satisfied. Similarly, incendiary bullets made by hand are presented in a fleeting dialogue... Which you will immediately remember when you first see an unlucky criminal being injured by it. Calling an almost 3-hour movie "economical" may be paradoxical, but nothing is wasted on Chapter 4
High Table's long siege of the Continental Hotel in Osaka may be the best single action scene in John Wick films to date, and we say this in a series that has already surpassed every other competitor in that category. Stahelsky expertly balances multiple points of view on the attack, maintaining the momentum of each character's efforts through an extended bloodbath. Chapter 3 gave us a sneak peek at what happens when a continental manager overrides the table's orders, but as Winston's brilliant counterpart, koji Shimazu (hiroyui Sanada) faces their wrath with unshakable conviction
Stahelsky uses Shimazu's relationship with his daughter Arika (Rina samayawa) to highlight how morality is in a world full of murderers, and Sanada gives an impressive performance both in the sweet and tender moments with his daughter and when holding a sword in his hands. What makes the Osaka scene even more satisfying is in how it reinforces the theme of friendship in Chapter 4: Wick is not trying to escape the Table quickly or by stealth, but rather that he goes for maximum damage, and only because he knows that he is to blame for bringing this mess to his friend's doorstep. The close connection between the action and John's inner state is superbly reviewed in a tense chase around the Arc de Triomphe, which takes place and John is in his most turbulent state. The most effective action scenes in the film also reflect and enhance the character, and Chapter 4 never forgets about it
For a series known for its visual splendor, Chapter 4 sets a new standard for production design and cinematography. Locations across Osaka, Paris, Berlin and New York have distinctive architectural qualities that allow director of photography Dan Laustsen various opportunities to immerse the characters in the neon colors that characterize the series. The ultra-modern lighting fixtures of continental Osaka, the warm street lamps of Paris, the Manhattan sunset passing through the long Bank of shadows in the Marquis's office, all this gives every movement in the story a clear color palette that gives each city a unique visual identity and makes us know exactly where John is. All this is reinforced by the enthusiastic soundtrack from Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard, which traces the transition of Chapter 4 from one culture to another and mixes with action in ways that accentuate or undermine big moments to great effect
This may seem like an impossible task, but Baba Yaga has a history of making it happen: John Wick: Chapter 4 surpasses its previous parts, and the action films of the last decade as a whole, to become a fashionable epic, something Keanu Reeves and Chad stahelsky have been heading towards since 2014. The wake World War Erupts with action design, creative and action-packed cinematography enhanced by the wonderful performance of an outstanding and unforgettable group of allies and villains, most notably Bill Skarsgard, all without losing the emotional side that leaves John's struggle for salvation at the heart of every bullet fired and every sword brandished
He [Sanada] has a moment with Donnie Yen. Yes,it does. I mean, when you have Hiroyuki Sanada and Donnie Yen going at it, it's always fun. When you have guys who come from the action genre world, and they both love acting, it's funny, they all have this similar thread. They just don't want to be trampled, they don't want to be Y-metaphorically. They want to try something new. They are very brave. It's not falling back into the same, 'let's just do the style I'm good at. Hiroyuki is used to the Japanese way of doing things, very accurate. And you have Donnie this is really an example of Hong Kong working out, ' let's just be great and make it up on a day out, and get energized. So putting them together and finding a little organic mix was really fun
Lionsgate
In June 2021, a text sent to subscribers confirmed John Wick: Chapter 4 began to rotate the cameras. "I started. Consider this a professional compliment. John Wick: Chapter 4 is in production now, " reading the script. Shamir Anderson confirmed the start of production later that day with a photo from the set
Collider exclusively learned that production on John Wick: Chapter 4 would largely take the action outside of New York City, with filming taking place primarily in Berlin and Paris before additional filming took place in Japan and New York. In addition, we learned that Lionsgate's original plan to shoot John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 in a row was put on hold due to the pandemic, and only John Wick 4 will be in the can by the end of the summer. Filming wrapped up in November 2021
One of the interesting observations that stahelsky revealed to the collider is that an action sequence was filmed inside the Louvre in France
"I would like to say that the greatest word will be difficult, very difficult. Obviously, we do our best where we are, and then we try to portray our way through some more complicated things. But we had an amazing site diversity on scout from Sacre co coeur, to the Arc de Triomphe, to the Louvre, to the Eiffel Tower, to some amazing places all around. I mean we were in Aqaba, Jordan for our opening sequence. Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Osaka. We got around on this one. So hopefully, we brought all those great images to the screen
Keanu Reeves will obviously play John Wick, a killer who wears a hell suit and knows almost 10,000 ways to make you dead. McShane reprises the role of Winston, the owner of the New York Continental Hotel, whom we last saw betraying John Wick with a bullet in his chest. Stahelsky noted that he still believes that Winston's intentions are explainable. He meant to shoot him,the director said. Did he mean to kill him? This is open to interpretation, you can take it one of two ways, and this is where we pick up some of the unanswered questions in John Wick
Lance Reddick will reprise the role of Sharon, the steel continental janitor, while Fishburne will again play the leader of the underground killer, Bowery King. Speaking to Collider, Skarsgard said his role does not require combat training but is " something different
In an interview with Collider, stahelsky also revealed some interesting information about the character of scarsig ocherd , the villain known as the Marquis
The name of his character, his broad name, is the Marquis. The Marquis, without giving up too much, will not really say the opponent, but he is responsible for cleaning up all the messes of the first three films
Shamir Anderson, on the other hand, has been posting a lot of behind-the-scenes looks at his intense gun training, hinting that whatever his character might be, he'll be in the thick of it along with Fuse. Marco Zaror, a businessman, martial artist and actor, will reportedly be one of John Wick's "main antagonists" in the film
Although there is no official plot summary yet for John Wick: Chapter 4, there is a lot of information about what we can expect. The film will take place after the explosive finale of John Wick 3, which saw John completely break away from the killer organization known as the high table. The consortium leadership believes that John died-thanks to Winston shooting him from the roof of a building–but he found himself injured in reality and in the care of Bowery King. Speaking to Collider, Fishburne revealed that the upcoming film, like every entry before it, will strive to dig deeper into the myths and traditions surrounding this world
"I read the script. It's really cool. As much as it is the same world as the other three films, it is deeper. It's much deeper in terms of the killer code and the relationship it has with one character in particular...is really the heart and soul of it
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Stahelski was very adamant that no matter where John Wick: Chapter 4 is going, it's not going to have a happy ending
"John may survive all this nonsense, but at the end of it, there is no happy ending. He has nowhere to go. Honestly, I challenge you now, here's a question for you: how do you want me to finish it? Do you think he's going to ride off into the fucking sunset? He's killed 300 fucking people and he's just going to [walk away], is everything okay? Is he just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you were this damn guy, if this guy really existed [ed], How would this guy's day end? He fucked for the rest of his life. It's just a matter of time
In November, Chad stahelsky told The Collider that the fourth entry in the series would be the longest at at least about 2.5 hours
He's in that area. I think, I'm different. The definition of runtime is the first slogan of this last balance. You know what I mean? Even the movie itself, I know what it works in. I don't know the full runtime because I don't know the credit scroll, and all the other things that are going on. So you have to add on that. But he's in the zone, yeah, it's over the 2 hour mark, but he's under a lot of other big marks
On February 13, Collider exclusively revealed that the film will be a whopping 2 hours and 49 minutes with credits, making it the longest film in the franchise. For comparison, the first film was 1 hour and 41 minutes, the second was 2 hours and 2 minutes, and the third was 2 hours and 10 minutes. This puts the blockbuster action movie at a similar running time to modern films
