"Night Train" is the Mini-format of "fast and Furious" (2009), where the plot revolves around drugs transported by cars. However, "Night Train" is more personal in this matter and highlights a mother, a professional driver, who enters the drug trafficking business so that she can buy her son medicines. As expected, she has a female police officer looking for her whereabouts. Will the mother be able to take care of her son? Let's figure it out
'Night train' plot summary: what happens in the movie
Holly McCord is a professional driver, her truck nicknamed The" Night Train, " who works as an employee of a production agency and barely meets his needs. She has bills for her son Shelby's medical examination, along with other debts. Thus, she communicates with the black market medical dealer Renzo Romeo to get her son's medicines at a much lower cost. Renzo delivers drugs to Maxwell's boss in Vegas via airplanes. But when Agent Connelly hires field agent Jaylen Jackson to rein in Maxwell (cocaine smuggling), who ventured his "black" way into medicine, upsetting people at major American pharmaceutical companies, Jackson took over the planes. The only way for Renzo to transport his drugs is by road. Desperate for her son's medicines, Holly decides to be the delivery man, relying on her driving skills, her powerful diesel truck, and the darkness of the night. Will holly be able to pull off her new job? Or will she be intercepted by Jackson and sent to prison, leaving behind her sick son
Holly issues
Holly is a single mother whose son Shelby is seriously ill. Being a pro driver, she makes ends meet by racing at night and by working as a staff for a Hollywood production agency during the day. She has her best friend, Tommy, the mechanic, who helps her out. Holly is a daredevil who, like what Mack told Johnny Blaze in "Ghost Rider" (2007), has an angel taking care of her. She survived a motorcycle accident in which she was riding at a speed of more than 180 miles per hour, receiving only cuts and bruises. Moreover, the fact that she decided to deliver Renzo's medicines to Vegas despite knowing how dangerous it is and how it can affect her son's life if she is sent to prison proves her confidence and courage. She knows a lot about her truck and cars in general, being the daughter of a car enthusiast, and puts her skills to use in the most important aspect of her life: her son. Being a single mom, she knows that she has to do what is necessary for her child, so driving to Vegas is not only a show of confidence but also of her fierce motherhood. Coming face to face with Maxwell at his place in Vegas, rejecting his offer, and taking the money he offers her as a reward is a decision that could certainly have led to an unfavorable outcome that Renzo later also mentioned. However, the film does not reach this point. If we had had a confrontation between Holly and Maxwell of some kind, Holly's strong personality would have been established more effectively. Thus the film leaves us knowing Holly's character instead of exploring her for us. And we, for better or worse, do not spend a lot of time doing this. Holly decides to leave the country and move to Mexico for some time with her son to avoid further interference in Maxwell's Affairs. That's when she is intercepted by field agent Jaylen Jackson
The best way to describe Jaylen Jackson is that she has nothing to lose. A former US soldier, she once killed a family based on bad intelligence, which she has been eating alive ever since. She suffers from PTSD for herself and spends her life living one day at a time. At the end of her wit, most of the time, Jackson has no time to talk about trash and mean business. However, there is another weak side to her that also results from the same incident, namely guilt. As Connelly told her, her guilt is her driving force. It's the only feeling she feels inside her that keeps her from losing her mind. However, how it affects her is not shown in the film; only that she was visibly shaken and was not able to recover from the trauma (hence PTSD). However, all this does not affect her from her task, because she cleverly finds out about diesel trucks that are also used to transport drugs. Then, during her conversation with Holly at the cafe, there is a constant exchange of energy between the two as they try to test each other. This is where we see the other side of Jackson, which is her attempt to beat her opponent. Perhaps this is her way of finding out how strong her opponent is. However, as with Holly, the film provides us with a bleak vision of Jackson's character as well. Despite giving her character dangerous characteristics such as PTSD and guilt combined with audacity, the portrayal of these is quite confusing. At some point, it basically made us wonder if she had a possible split personality disorder (although here we are rising, it is appropriate)
'Night train' Finale Explained - are Holly and her son making it to Mexico
When Holly decides to take her son and escape to Mexico, Renzo joins them. He has feelings for her and doesn't want her to be alone. Also, he has sources in Mexico that will help her come up with her son's meds. However, just before they can cross the border, they come across agent Jackson. And then something very interesting happens. We can't say whether this is a cheap way for the creators or a smart one, but Holly is able to manipulate Jackson, if not admit it, by telling her that they are absolutely similar to each other. Holly and Jackson are trying to escape from their past, Holly by giving her son a better life, and Jackson by looking for a goal and possibly atonement. Holly addresses Jackson's penance by saying that the innocent child that Jackson killed (as part of the family in Baghdad due to bad intelligence) has returned in the form of Holly's son, Shelby. Jackson gets down on her knees, proving that Holly's spell has worked. Holly then gives her Connelly's phone number as the first detailed route that will lead her to Maxwell. Jackson did not know that Connelly was involved with Maxwell, but now that she has, she will do what needs to be done. Then Holly, her son and Renzo were allowed to pass through the border and get to Mexico. Renzo already has a new car waiting for them, one slower than Holly's night train, and he tells Holly that it's time to slow down a little. In other words, Holly won't have to risk her life behind wheels for a living
"Night train" does not really do justice to its title. If we had some glimpses into Holly's past or maybe one or two other races, these would have better defined the title. After all, she, and not her truck, is the night train. While we see a happy ending, the film remains incomplete in the way it deals with its main characters. We have to make do with what we are given, and that's the end of it. A one-time watch and nothing more
"Night Train" is a 2023 action thriller film directed by Shane Stanley
