Markus marakovich, a short-tempered, but skillful assistant coach, with a minor league basketball team in Iowa, lets his nerves get the best of him during the game and pushes the head coach, Phil. After leaving the stadium, he gets drunk in a bar and while driving home he crashes into a police car, ending up in prison. The next day he was rescued by an elephant. He got into an argument with Phil, believing that he was right and if Phil had listened, none of the previous night would have happened. Phil explains why he is not listened to and advises Marcus to get to know the players more, that they have a personal life that affects their gameplay. Then he told Marcus that he was abandoned by the owners
When Marcus shows up for his hearing, the judge gives him a choice of 18 months in prison, or 90 days of community service with a basketball team for people with learning disabilities, friends. He agrees to serve the community and soon realizes that training this team will be a personal and professional challenge. At the end of the first practice, he accepts a ride home with Johnny, one of the guys, only to find the driver is a former Tinder one-night stand and Johnny's sister, Alex. He and Alex begin a casual sexual relationship while he learns how to coach the new team
The team begins to improve and Marcus soon realizes that the players are more than just their skills when he gets to know them. Since one of the team members, Darius, refuses to play with Marcus, a previously injured player, Constantino is put back into the rotation. The team is thrown off the bus when the team "disrupts" the other passengers and Johnny calls his sister to pick them up in her Shakespeare travel van. Fortunately, Marcus and the team persuaded her to be their driver in away matches
Johnny becomes more attached to Marcus and invites him to dinner and as soon as he arrives, Marcus shares Johnny's news about moving into a shared house with some friends. Alex becomes defensive and asks Marcus to stay away from the family business and leaves the house, but Alex confronts him in the yard. Marcus realizes that Alex is quietly using her daily routine of taking care of Johnny as an excuse to break up with her friends before Johnny becomes attached to them. After that, Alex tells Marcus that they are done. Johnny gets angry at Marcus for hurting his sister and lying to him and refuses to play, but during the first half of the match, Constantino tells him that he is not playing with the coach, he is playing with the rest of the team, so he needs to get past him
Marcus asks one of the assistant coaches with his former team, Sonny, who has an uncle who is an NBA manager, to help him find a new job but his uncle refuses. Sonny drives Marcus for a while, hoping that they will become friends but they realize that Marcus was nice to him to get a job in the NBA. When Marcus realizes how manipulative he is, he asks Sonny to help him train friends and he agrees
Benny, one of the guys who works at a restaurant, has been unable to play in matches because his boss refuses to let him adjust his schedule. As soon as the team manages to reach the semifinals, he tells his boss that he should be able to adjust his schedule to play for the team and is fired, but now he is able to play and is one of the main scorers. Marcus and Phil meet by chance at a restaurant and Phil lets Marcus know that Darius, his teammate who refuses to play for Marcus, had a promising career before he was involved in a terrible car accident and ended up with brain damage. Marcus realizes that it was a drunk driver who hit Darius and goes to his house to apologize and explain that he will never drive drunk again, but he understands why Darius did not play for him. Realizing that he needs to be able to forgive the woman who hit him, Darius decides to start with Marcus and agrees to go to the finals of the Special Olympics in Winnipeg
Marcus receives news that he has been hired by the NBA team in Seattle as a third assistant, but Alex tells him that they are using his good story as a cover for their scandal. When he tells friends that he is moving to Seattle, they cannot make themselves happy, knowing that it will take him away and Johnny will get angry with him again. The director of the community center, Julio, tells Marcos that the city does not have the money to send the players to Canada, so Marcos creates a scheme with Alex to blackmail the owner of the restaurant where Benny worked and they can attend the finals. Friends are intimidated by the size and name of the opposing team, monsters, and this appears in their play, so when they are frustrated during the first half, Marcus puts forward all the situations he conquered and calls them heroes. Upon returning to court, Johnny climbs the stairs to have his" hero " moment by telling Alex that he is moving in with his friends
Friends gathered during the second half and are one point away from winning, so Marcus is trying to set up a play that will make Darius shoot the last shot. The assistant coach says it's a bad idea because the other team knows that Darius is the best player and they will be everywhere. Marcus begins to scold him as Phil did to him but catches himself and realizes that the Assistant is right and sets up a wolf pickaxe game with Johnny. The play works and Johnny is about to make the basket when another player, Showtime, yells open and Johnny passes the ball to him, only for Showtime to make his trademark move with a backhand. He misses the basket but hits the rim, and the team goes wild because he has never hit the rim. This results in the team losing, but they still see themselves as heroes due to Marcus ' enthusiastic talk
Marcus decides not to take the Seattle job, realizing that Alex was right, and offers him a local coaching job at Drake University. His former assistant takes over the coaching of friends, Marcus and Alex begin dating, and Johnny moves in with his friends in the common house
