Dolph Lundgren

Born on November 3, 1957 in Stockholm to a mother who is a language teacher and a Swedish father who is an engineer and economist, Dolph Lundgren attended the prestigious Royal Institute of Technology in his hometown where he obtained a master's degree in chemistry. The youngest of four children, he devotes himself to his studies. "I've spent so much time poring over books that I should have an indelible ink stain on the tip of my nose," he smiles. "At the time I wanted to imitate my father and commit myself to an engineering career. Far be it from me to think about cinema and show business in general
Thanks to a scholarship, he left his country in 1977 for a year to continue his studies at Washington State University. He then returned to Sweden and graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology. After his military service in the navy, he attended the universities of Sydney and Boston, helped in this by scholarships (including a Fulbright program for the prestigious M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology))
At the age of sixteen, he turned to martial arts. After trying judo, he engages in the practice of karate, first in the gōjū-ryū style, then in a style more focused on real-strike combat, kyokushinkai. He began high-level competition in 1979, even before being a black belt (which he obtained in 1981), and participated in the second world championship, where he was among the last thirty-two competitors (losing to the defending champion after several extensions). He then accumulated national titles, winning in particular the British Open in 1980 and 1981 — which had value at the time of European level championship - then the Australian Open in 1982. For the purposes of the film Pentathlon, released in 1994, he trains with the American pentathlon team in 1993. This is what allows him to participate in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 as (honorary) captain of the American team
Refusing the proposals of the greatest boxing managers in the United States, he still thinks of devoting himself to studies when he meets the drama teacher Warren Robertson, disciple of Lee Strasberg, one of the founders of the Actors Studio. He decides to become an actor and gets the role of a KGB agent in Dangerously Yours through his flirt of the moment, the singer Grace Jones. This modest participation marks his cinematic debut. A debut that could have been made with Rambo 2: The Mission, a film for which he auditioned. But Sylvester Stallone preferred that he play in Rocky 4, despite the reluctance of the casting teams. The choice is wise since Lundgren interprets his role masterfully, which allows him to become overnight one of the greatest hopes of action cinema

Dolph Lundgren began his many studies at a large Swedish school, the Royal Institute of Technology. After his military service, he continued his studies at various major schools (including a significant part in the United States) and obtained, in 1982, a master's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Sydney. In 1983, he was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was during the same year that he decided to move to New York with the singer Grace Jones and take acting classes
His first contact was through judo at the age of 14. He stopped a year later to switch to karate, goju-ryu style, then kyokushinkai. He continues to train throughout his studies. It was during his military service that he met his teacher, Brian Fitkin, world team champion
In 1979, when he was only a green belt, he was selected to participate in the kyokushinkai world karate championships, where he lost to the defending champion after several extensions and contested decision. Captain of the Swedish team, he won European karate titles in 1980 and 1981, and won the Australian Open in 1982
It is in Australia that he meets Grace Jones, while he is working on security at a concert of the singer. They quickly start a relationship and he leaves to live with her in New York for several years
After Rocky 4, he shoots a fitness video tape, Maximum Potential, released in 1987
He was chosen in 1996 to be the captain of the American pentathlon team at the Atlanta Olympics
His first film role was in 1985 in a James Bond, Dangerously Yours, alongside Roger Moore, Christopher Walken and his girlfriend at the time, Grace Jones
But he stands out in Rocky 4 alongside Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen, where he plays Ivan Drago, an impressive 1.97 m Russian boxer, who must beat Rocky. He gets the role after a casting involving more than 5,000 participants. He has remained friends with Sylvester Stallone since the filming of the film
A good number of Hollywood producers are impressed by his build and that's how he landed the role of Musclor, the following year, in The Masters of the Universe. This film, adapted from a toy line and a successful animated series of the 1980s, is a semi-failure
He released a fitness videotape entitled Maximum Potential in 1987
Despite a certain charisma, the actor's career as a star never really takes off. The Red Scorpion, Punisher in 1989 or even Dark Angel in 1990 are half-failures, just like Special Envoy. Warner calls on him to play one of the two heroes of In the Clutches of the Red Dragon. He teams up with Brandon Lee, whose studio is trying to make a new superstar in the image of his father, Bruce Lee. The film, remounted and poorly distributed by the studio in the United States, was a failure and was then distributed only on video in the rest of the world
Lundgren manages to revive his career, alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme, in Universal Soldier. The film fills theaters all over the world[ref. necessary] and many critics believe that he eclipses his partner
One of his last films to be distributed in theaters in France is The Man of War in 1995, which receives a very good critical reception[ref. necessary] despite yet another commercial failure. Johnny Mnemonic, released the same year, with Keanu Reeves and Takeshi Kitano, is a critical failure (despite the praise for Lundgren) and commercial
If Lundgren does not manage to match the success of the main actors of action films of the time (Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme), his films nevertheless find an audience in video clubs, and a core of extremely loyal fans is gradually developing

So he begins to chain the "direct-to-video". Films such as Shooter in Danger by Russell Mulcahy (first released in France on VHS / DVD under the title Assassin Warrior, which was released in theaters in Italy and Asia), State of Emergency by Frédéric Forestier (released in theaters in Italy and Asia) or even The Deminers stand out, just like Blackjack, directed by John Woo. In the years that followed, atypical works such as Jill the Killer by Anthony Hickox or Witnesses on Probation attracted attention
Starting in 2004, Lundgren relaunched his career by becoming a director. He is shooting La Sentinelle (first released in France on DVD under its original title The Defender) by replacing his original director, Sidney J. Furie, who has to leave the project for health reasons. Encouraged by the result, Lundgren directed The Mechanik, Missionary Man, Elite Commando and Icarus, well-received B-series despite still modest budgets
For the general public, Lundgren especially made a remarkable comeback in 2010 thanks to the film Expendables: Special Unit (The Expendables). He finds Sylvester Stallone there, 25 years after Rocky 4. This is the biggest production he has worked on, and his first film released in theaters in France since The Shooter, in 1996
During the period 2010-2011, Lundgren starred in the films King Rising 2 (In The Name Of The King 2) by Uwe Boll, Small Apartments by Jonas Åkerlund (with James Caan, Johnny Knoxville and Billy Crystal), Trapped (Stash House) by Eduardo Rodriguez, produced by Joel Silver, Universal Soldier: The Day of Judgment by John Hyams (with Scott Adkins and Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Shoot the Killer (One In the Chamber) by William Kaufman with Cuba Gooding Jr. He also reprises his role as Gunnar Jensen for Expendables 2: Special Unit (The Expendables 2), released on August 22, 2012
He has since shot the films Blood Debt (The Package) by Jesse V. Johnson with Steve Austin, The Crypt of the Dragon with Scott Adkins, Battle of the Damned, the game show Race to The Scene of which he is the presenter, Hard Rush (Ambushed) (with Vinnie Jones and Randy Couture), Blood of Redemption (with Vinnie Jones and Billy Zane)
In 2011, Fit Forever, his autobiographical fitness book, was published, which was released in 2014 under the title Train Like An Action Hero in the United States
In October 2012, he was chosen to play the main role in the TV series SAF3, which was filmed in summer/autumn 2013. In it, he plays Captain John Erickson, leader of an elite team consisting of firefighters and coast guards. Each episode tells the story of a rescue
In 2014, he produced Skin Trade in Thailand, a long-standing personal project that he co-wrote around human trafficking. Tony Jaa, Ron Perlman, Michael Jai White complete the cast
In 2016, Dolph Lungdren plays the first role of a cop in Kindergarten 2, which, released directly on DVD and streaming, is a success
2018 is an important year for the actor. He first finds Jean-Claude Van Damme in Black Water, then Sylvester Stallone and his role as Ivan Drago in Creed 2, a big success at the box office. He also plays King Nereus in the blockbuster Aquaman
Lundgren got married in Stockholm in 1994 with the Swedish stylist Anette Qviberg. Together they had two daughters: Ida and Greta. They filed for divorce in March 2011
Children
Ida Sigrid Lundgren (April 29, 1996)

On May 11, 2023, he announced that he had been suffering from cancer for more than 8 years, in 2015, he had a kidney tumor removed and then appeared, a new liver tumor then spreading to the lungs and stomach in particular. He announces that his cancer has since decreased by more than 90% and that he would be on the right path to cure

The intimate family drama of independent director Shane DAX Taylor boasts some big names ; Hollywood mainstay Val Kilmer, as well as actors-turned-country stars Kris Kristofferson and Dwight Yoakum, played key roles in his family's 2010 melodrama "Bloodworth", which boasted a score from Grammy Award-winning music producer and composer T Bone Burnett. After leaving film school, Taylor got a job at ESPN to film team and professional sports events around the country. He stayed there for almost a decade before deciding to go out on his own as a director. In 2004 he released "gray", based on the novel by Frank Manley about a young Southern boy (John quartermouse) who was recruited into the evil world of underground cockfighting by his cruel alcoholic father (Mark Boone Jr.). The film was a modest success on the film festival circuit and served as a calling card for Taylor to drum up support for his next film, an adaptation of author William Jay's novel "night interruptions. The film was released in 2008 and renamed "Bloodworth", the film follows the exploits of the patriarch of the family E. A. Bloodworth (Kristofferson), a drinking musician, having abandoned his wife and sons decades earlier, has returned to confront their long-standing anger. Despite the fact that the film received generally positive reviews, it suffered from comparisons with the similarly themed "Crazy Heart"and finally opposed to this action-packed thriller interesting sequel
